TM-1181 is the full repair manual for the 4040 and 4240. The PDF name mentions the engine, but it covers the whole tractor, from the diesel to the hitch. If you're keeping one of these in the field, it's the reference for the jobs that go past routine service.

Then come engine repair, fuel and air, and the power train with each transmission in its own group: Power Shift (8 forward, 4 reverse), Quad-Range (16 forward, 6 reverse, with Perma-Clutch), Syncro-Range (8 forward, 2 reverse) and the Creeper. It also covers the dual-speed PTO, differential, final drives and the optional power front-wheel drive, then power steering and brakes, and the closed-center, constant-pressure hydraulics with rockshaft, implement hitch and selective control valve.
