John Deere 344E and 444E Loader Operation and Test Technical Manual (TM1421)

These loaders use a hydrostatic transmission rather than a torque converter, and much of TM1421 explains how that closed-loop drive works and how to test it. It's the diagnostic manual to start with when a 344E or 444E loses drive, steering or loader power.

What this manual covers

It covers general specs, torque values and fluids, the operational checkout, then theory, diagnostics and tests for the engine and electrical system. The power train section covers the HST: charge pump, loader and steering pump, pressure regulating and dig-mode valves, and the shuttle and motor displacement control valves. Then the combined loader and steering hydraulics, brakes, and heating and air conditioning. Brake and transmission circuits are shown separately for the 344E because its valve layout differs from the 444E. A bucket selection guide matches material density to bucket size for each loader's tipping load.
